Testing for structural stability is a vital step of a materials inspection checklist. At no point should a structure be entered, climbed or utilized until a proper safety check has been completed. In most cases, there are NDT options to alleviate or lessen the damage while inspecting for safety. UT has the ability to test the safety of media like wood, vinyl and other area separating devices without needing to cut into them. The material inspection checklist should always ensure that up to date and comprehensive data is available on-site. Similar to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), the material inspection checklist is an essential starting point in the development of a safe and low-risk project.
Obviously and most importantly, the list needs to be accessed and used after it is put together. Far too often, comprehensive data like this is simply noted and not referenced. Developing and then using these lists will ensure a safer structure and site, and ultimately alleviate risks in the future.
