Conversations in Non-Destructive Testing Equipment
Mood:  energetic
Topic: Portable non-destructive testing

Construction and material maintenance are high risk industries that perform repairs, remodeling, commercial construction, and more. Because of the possible dangerous conditions on the job, it is imperative to be aware of material failures without harming the project or the workers. Non-destructive testing equipment (NDT) creates a nonintrusive way to provide certainty that everything in the construction project is working as it should. NDT has the ability to prevent possible hazardous issues as a simple step in your material inspection checklist.

Material inspection checklists are usually broken down into the following sections:

·         Materials being used

·         Potential for hazardous exposure

·         Structural safety and integrity/locating hidden or concealed dangers

Inventory Materials Being Inspected

In most instances regarding the inspection of structures and foundations, the materials being inspected will fall into one of three areas: concrete, metal, or media (which includes, wood, epoxy and other light construction materials). Identifying and listing the principle materials to be inspected is the first step in a material inspection checklist. Concrete Testing Equipmentand Metal Testing Equipment not only save money, they can save lives.

Most testing equipment is specialized for a certain material. To get accurate results, it is important to use the proper testing equipment for your specific media.

Potential for Hazardous Exposure

Checking for potential harm is the second step in a material inspection checklist. When inspecting construction materials, one must be mindful of the possibility of hazardous or combustible materials present on site. No matter what you are inspecting, it is important to be aware of possible exposures and take appropriate steps to alleviate the risk of injury.

Structural Safety and Integrity

Testing for structural stability is a vital step of a materials inspection checklist. At no point should a structure be entered, climbed or utilized until a proper safety check has been completed. In most cases, there are NDT options to alleviate or lessen the damage while inspecting for safety. Ultrasonic Testing Equipment is an NDT option for peering into lateral and elevated materials that require a deep and thorough inspection. UT has the ability to test the safety of media like wood, vinyl and other area separating devices without needing to cut into them. UT can also determine flaws in structurally important metals and composites that are in a fixed position, alleviating the need to move them for evaluation.

Additionally, the Ground Penetrating Radar is an excellent option to ensure the structural stability of foundations and poured footings.

Moving Forward

The material inspection checklist should always ensure that up to date and comprehensive data is available on-site. Similar to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), the material inspection checklist is an essential starting point in the development of a safe and low-risk project.

Obviously and most importantly, the list needs to be accessed and used after it is put together. Far too often, comprehensive data like this is simply noted and not referenced. Developing and then using these lists will ensure a safer structure and site, and ultimately alleviate risks in the future.
